 Simsbury Display
While Kathyrn Lord, our Outreach Chair, was mounting the November CRVC display in Granby,
Barbara Butterworth, the Art Coordinator for the Simsbury Public Library, happened by.
She admired the pieces, and said they never had anything like that in Simsbury --- would we
like to put up an exhibit there in 2023?
We settled on May.  We will be gathering pieces in April, starting at the April 1, 2023
Annual Meeting at Thistle Needleworks, and returning them in
June, including at the June 10 meeting, also at Thistle Needleworks.
The space in Simsbury is larger than in Granby and is entirely within locked cases that are
54 inches tall with many movable shelves.  This is a chance to show off some of our larger
pieces!  There's plenty of room for smaller work, of course, and the cases are deep enough
for stand-ups and 3-D items.
Since this is a space new to us, the only "theme" will be your favorites, pieces you are
especially proud of, whether they are EGA classes or commercial kits or your own designs, no
matter when they were finished (up to 6 pieces per member, more if small).  We need for
each piece the title, designer, stitcher, and any comments you would like to share about it.
Since we have plenty of room here, we especially invite members who have never shown pieces with
us before to do so now.  And if anyone really really wants to have their "Iris" from last
year's Zoom workshop in the display, contact Kathryn early to hold the space!
If you would like to participate but can't be at the April or June meetings, contact Kathryn
Lord directly at hglord@cox.net or Lisa Green at
klisagreen@yahoo.com to arrange pick-up and drop-off.
The Post Office works well, too; get in touch if you want to go that route.

"Tidal Treasures"

 Some of Celeste's
fondest memories are of walking along the beach picking up sea shells.  As the waves gently roll in,
you can search the sandy beach to see what treasure you might discover.  Each shell is a mystery,
a question of what sea creature once inhabited it.  In this class, we will create our own tidal
treasures: a starfish needle minder, a sea urchin pin cushion and scallop needle book.
Kit includes instructions, silk shantung, silk dupioni, Weeks Dye Works stranded cotton threads,
Mill Hill Antique Glass Beads, Ultrasuede, finishing materials and needles.  Students to provide
4" and 6" embroidery hoops, 10" x 10" Evertite frame or stretcher bars with brass tacks and tightening
tool, 6" ruler, white tissue paper, tweezers, masking tape, scissors for cutting paper and felt,
mechanical pencil or similar, straight pins, cream colored sewing thread, needle threader, and usual
stitching supplies.  Magnification and lighting is highly recommended.
 Skill Level:  Advanced

Annual Meeting
Our program will be in person at Thistle Needleworks.  We will have lots of
Show and Tell.  We plan to start a piece by Caela Conn Tyler called Just for Fun!

"Just for Fun! A Study in Textures" was a cyber class by Caela Conn Tyler back in 2002.
You can do the piece in her colorway or choose your own from your stash.  We will provide complete
instructions.  We will also continue with this piece at our June meeting.
Linda Berry stitched it and saved the detailed instructions with large scale diagrams and the
emailed lectures and colored pictures sent with each lesson.  You feel like Caela is right there
with you supplying helpful hints on both materials and stitches.  Stitches include whipped back
stitch, Katie's Stitch, free-form needle weaving, web stitch, attaching beads, irregular eyelets &
pulled coil, Rhodes circle, diamond darning pattern, flat diamond stitch, cushion cross corners, whipped
spiders, diamond eyelets, Smyrna cross, looped ribbon and beads, filet stitch, large woven star, and loop
stitch.
The piece is stitched on Congress cloth 12" x 12" (design is 6" diameter) using DMC Six-Strand
Embroidery Thread #353, Décor #1514 (or Trebizond), Marlitt #1042, #8 Pearl Cotton #353, Delta #0-2,
Zeta #0-2, Medici #8139, Silk Ribbon #167, Spring II #324S or Gumnuts Poppies #823, and YLI Fine
Metallic #R-10.

Zoom Class with Wendy Moore"Kimono Imperial Ornament"

| This delightfully sophisticated ornament finishes as a 4”x4” Mini-Kimono.  As an ornament,
this kimono highlights a beautiful Bargello pattern in Imperial gold, red, and blue.  Using DMC Floche,
Kreinik metallics, DMC & ThreadworX over-dyed floss, and a few beads, this kimono will make an
impression.  You will explore how wonderfully the Bargello pattern fits into the kimono and
stitch a unique variation of an octagonal Rhodes stitch.  The kit will include the canvas,
all the threads and beads, instructions and photos.  Student will provide 8” stretcher bars
(2 pair), laying tool, frame or frame weight, usual stitching supplies, and light and magnification if desired.
A registration coupon is provided for this meeting.  The deadline is
October 1st. |
