Saturday, June 6th

To end our year, we will meet at Suzanne Newton's house for a potluck luncheon and stitch-in.  Bring whatever you want to work on: maybe it could be your seminar piece.  Suzanne's lovely sunroom has room for us all with wide open windows or air conditioning, whatever the day dictates.  The meeting will be from 10am to 3pm, and her address is 14 Madison Lane, West Simsbury.  Contact Suzanne at sfnjsn@att.net if you need further information.

Please fill in the coupon at the end of this newsletter so we can plan our space.  The deadline for signing up is June 1st.

CRVC is looking for your best work!

We are having an exhibit at the Duncaster Gallery for the month of February, 2016.  There is space for 20-30 pieces, depending on size, including a small amount of shelf space for three-dimensional pieces.
The Gallery regularly shows professional artists, so we want to display our finest.  They do not have to be from CRVC or EGA workshops – just quality design and stitching, including from kits.  We would like a range of techniques, and also participation of as many members as possible.  (The pieces brought for our anniversary luncheon were really impressive – maybe a few of those?)
Please contact Kathryn Lord with a description of any work you would like to loan for our exhibit: size, title, designer, stitcher, and primary techniques used (a photo would be helpful but not required).  Duncaster covers insurance for theft or vandalism, so we’ll need a rough estimate of value for those pieces we include.
Contact Kathryn at: hglord@cox.net or 860-653-0301 or 403 Salmon Brook Street, Granby CT 06035.
More details to follow this fall.  This promises to be an excellent showcase for CRVC, and we hope for good participation!

Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 9th, 10th & 11th

            "Spring Meadow" - Jeanette Rees

Spring awakens following the winter chills and blues with a young fawn quietly sitting in the meadow with a little owl looking down.

The class begins with color washing the canvas, on which the student will then do both surface and traditional stitching.  New blades of grass and blossoming flowers along with young trees are stitched with hand dyed threads and silk ribbon.  The large tree will be stitched on a separate piece of canvas, then padded and appliquéd to the main forest piece.  Dimension is enhanced by the use of padded batik fabric.

Creativity is encouraged, as students add their own touches to this stitched forest.  Color wash paints and brushes will be available for use in class.

This class will give the stitcher all the needed elements to complete the piece at home.  Please note that the deadline for signing up for this class is September 1st.

FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS   (All members are welcome)
Location:  Thistle Needleworks at 10 am
Tuesday, September 1st      Tuesday, November 10th

CRVC Library

Our CRVC Library has seen very little use in the last 5-10 years and therefore the Board has made the difficult decision to dissolve it.  Chapter members are being offered the first opportunity to purchase the books in the library with the funds going into the education fund.

The list of books in the library is on the CRVC web site, listed both alphabetically by title --
www.crvc-ega.org/library/librarybooksbytitle.html -- and alphabetically by author --
www.crvc-ega.org/library/librarybooksbyauthor.html.  If you are interested in one of more titles, please contact the librarian at ThisNeedle@aol.com with the title(s) and the price you are willing to pay for that title.  Once you are notified that the books are yours, please arrange to pick them up at Thistle Needleworks before August 10th.  If you prefer to have your book(s) mailed to you, please let me know and I will let you know how much the postage will be (via Media Mail).

If all the books are not distributed to members, we will offer them to other chapters and other EGA members.

Announcing the next Group Correspondence Courses offered by NER :

·        A Frenzy of Fringes taught by Jeanette Carmichael

·        Keeping in Shape taught by Gwen Nelson

·        Meadow Medley taught by Luan Callery

·       A Frenzy of Fringes (Teacher: Jeanette Carmichael)

·        Frenzy Of Fringes GCCThis unique sampler is your chance to enjoy making 23 distinct beaded fringes.  Though each fringe is short to fit the space provided within the sampler, it is a complete fringe, and gives the participant enough information and experience to make it and decide whether or not to use it on another project.

·

·        Most of the fringes use small amounts of size 11 seed beads. A home seed stash may be sufficient for many of them.  Included is a measuring guide that reduces grams to teaspoons to help determine if the participant’s stash is sufficient or to help calculate the cost of beads if sharing with others.

·

·        This is a totally new concept in samplers and a fun way to learn how to do beaded fringes.  Challenges are offered for color suggestions: selection using the participant’s own choices, or an alternate three-color sampler to reduce the cost of the project.

·

·        Teacher: Jeanette Carmichael

·        Project: Twenty-three distinctly different beaded fringes are stitched on Aida cloth outlined in cross-stitched sections.  Filled with seed, bugle, faceted crystal and other beads, the completed sampler can be proudly displayed in the home as well as provide a guide for future fringed projects..

·        Size: Sampler 10.5 x 13.5 inches

·        Fabric: 14 x 17 inches white11-count Aida cloth

·        Threads:  DMC cotton floss, polyester sewing thread

·        Colors: Varied, using suggestions or participant’s choice

·        Beads:  Small amounts of various size 11° and 8° seeds; 2, 4, 6 and 8mm round; #2 and #5 bugles; and a few miscellaneous specialty beads.

·        Proficiency Level:  Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

·        Prerequisites:   None

·        Time:  Three months

·        Supplies (approximate): $30 - $80 depending on sharing and participant’s bead stash

Keeping in Shape (Teacher: Gwen Nelson)

Keeping In Shape GCCKeeping in Shape was originally called Keeping in Shape with EGA.  The teacher designed this for the region directors to bead and submit for the live auction at the 2009 EGA National Seminar.  The thirteen three-dimensional geometric pieces represent the thirteen EGA regions.

The student uses various techniques to make the geometric shapes.  Among the techniques are circular and flat peyote to make some of the pieces.  The student will also use the herringbone stitch to shape other pieces. Some of the pieces include a combination of beading techniques. The finished necklace includes an assortment of triangles, circles, rectangular solids, cylinders, and cubes.  The strap is a spiral rope of seed beads and Swarovski crystals.  Embellishments include Swarovski crystals and rondelles.

Meadow Medley (Teacher: Luan Callery)

Meadow Medley GCCWhile wandering through a meadow, one might find wild roses, clover, Queen Anne's lace, wild asters and golden rod. Or, one might sit comfortably at home stitching her own medley.

DMC floss on cotton broadcloth works well to bring these meadow flowers to life. The stitches and colors are planned to enhance the design with texture and dimension while honing your embroidery skills.

Diagrams and pictures appear throughout the text. Along with the cover photograph, there is an actual size photocopy of the piece detailing each and every stitch.

Stitches used include lazy daisy with a twist, split and satin stitch, outline, French knots, bullion knots and fly stitch. Long and short shading comes into play with the aster and wild rose. There are two types of padding and the tendrils add a touch of whimsy with the creation of finely twisted cord.
