"Quiet Moments" – Jeanette Rees (A Foley/Cornelius Teacher)

Mark your calendar now to reserve these three days!  Jeanette is very innovative with her techniques and has taught at EGA National Seminars.  Although this picture does not show the piece in all of its glory, you may check her website to see it more clearly.  There is a wonderful cardinal in the crotch of the tree and a sweet little rabbit on the left side.

Quiet Moments by Jeanette Rees

Proficiency Level: Intermediate
Design Size: 7" x 9"
Ground: 24-count Congress Cloth, white
Class Description:

Picture the still quiet of winter as the snow settles, with only a little bunny and cardinal in view.  This is the scene that you will detail as part of the dimensional canvas work "Quiet Moments" class.

The class begins with color washing the canvas, on which the students will then do both surface and traditional stitching.  Students will learn a variety of different techniques as they stitch the large tree on a separate piece of canvas, then pad and appliqué it to the main forest piece.  Dimension is enhanced by the use of padded Batik fabric embellished with metallic and cotton cording.  Various geometric stitches and French knots enhance the snow mounds.

Creativity is encouraged, as students add their own touches to this stitched forest with a variety of rayon threads, cotton flosses, and metallic threads.  Color wash paints and brushes will be available for use in class to further enhance the piece.

This class will give the stitcher all the needed elements to complete the piece at home.

Technique: Traditional, Surface, Dimensional Embroidery
Kit Fee: $80
Pre-stitching: None
Student to Supply:

11"x13" stretcher bars, laying tool, and usual stitching supplies.

Location:  Duncaster Senior Residence in Bloomfield, CT
Time:  Class will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on all three days

The deadline for signing up for this class is September 15th.  A coupon for registration is at the end of this newsletter.

Saturday, December 7th

We plan to attend the Festival of Trees at the Wadsworth Atheneum and enjoy lunch afterwards.

Friday & Saturday, January 31 & February 1, 2014

"Winter In The Forest" – Lynn Payette (A Foley/Cornelius Teacher)

This is the piece that we all admired at the December class with Lynn.

Fabrics – sheers, shinys, and opaques – will be layered and stitched on a soft gray-lavender 18 ct. canvas to create the reflections and shadows from trees on both the snow and the stream.  These will be overstitched with a variety of fibers, threads, and metallics.

Novelty threads and yarns, as well as flosses and pearl cottons (#5, 8, and 12), and pantyhose, will be used to create the trees.  Slender, ‘finger like’ branches, behind and in front of other trees, give the necessary perspective to the design.  Stitches used will be couching, back stitch, whipped back stitch (worked to create the gnarled look of branches), and outline stitch.  The trees have an extremely realistic look to them, as the fibers used will mimic bark.  Note: Pantyhose is an incredible fiber to use for stitching.  All sorts of things can be done with it, from snipping in at the edges to create branches, to stretching it and stitching with it.

The stream running through the forest will be created using a variety of opaque, shiny, and sheer fabrics.  These will be stitched down with flosses, invisible thread, pearl cottons, and metallic fibers after the student studies the ‘light source’ for the piece.  Again, the placement of these will be the student’s choice.  The stitches used will be couching, back stitch (with and without whipping), and outline.  The beginnings and endings of the fabrics will be cleverly hidden within the edges of the tree trunks, branches, and the edges of the stream.

A buildup of stitches for dimension, perspective, and effect will be taught.  There will be a heavy amount of attention given to this, as it is a necessary component of the design.

Winter In The Forest by Lynn Payette

The pattern for this piece will be drawn on the canvas, and the student will work from that.  It will not be charted, as the student will need to place stitches, fibers, etc. over fabrics, and the canvas will not show through all the fabrics.  This will create a unique challenge to the canvas worker.  I have used this method of stitching with canvas workers before, and the results and enthusiasm are incredible.

PRICE OF KIT:  $85.00
GROUND FABRIC:  18 ct. pale gray-lavender canvas
SIZE:  5" x 5"

The deadline for signing up for this class is December 15th.  A coupon for registration is at the end of this newsletter.

"My Thoughts of Spring Band Sampler" – Catherine Theron (A Foley/Cornelius Teacher)

My Thoughts Of Spring by Catherine Theron (top)   My Thoughts Of Spring by Catherine Theron (bottom)

Create a 17th century inspired counted thread band sampler using silk flosses in rich shades of red, green, gold, blue and brown.  This sampler measures 5" x 30" and is worked on 35-count cream linen.

Stitches used include Double Running, Long-Arm Cross, Montenegrin, Diagonal Cross, Satin, Queen, Diagonal Queen, Upright Cross, Algerian Eye, Double Straight Cross, Gobelin, Smyrna Cross, Cross-Stitch Over One, Four-Sided, Chain, Diamond Eyelet, Padded Satin, Buttonhole Bar, Detached Buttonhole, Spiral Trellis, Palestrina Knots and Bullion Knots.

The top section of this rich, textured piece features polychromatic bands with strawberries and flowers.  The saying "How blest is she among the fair by gentlest stars inclined, who cherishes with love sincere the virtues of the mind" is interspersed between the bands.

The bottom section of this sampler is monochromatic and is worked using two weights of cream silk to enhance the texture and design.

This piece is recommended for the intermediate to advanced counted thread student.  There is no pre-work or prerequisites required.

Time:  Class will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on both days

The deadline for signing up for this class is May 1st, 2014.  A coupon for registration is at the end of this newsletter.

New England Region Day 2013
Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20, 2013
The Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel – Warwick, Rhode Island

NER is proud to present two fantastic classes taught by outstanding, internationally-known teachers, plus studio time for those choosing to continue working on an existing project, for Region Day 2013.  NER is again underwriting a significant portion of the costs (teaching fees, teacher travel, room rental, and lunch) for this event, making this day an exceptional educational bargain at this price.  The hardest part is choosing which class to take!

This year, Region “Day” is a bit little different.   Gary Clarke, who joins us as part of the International Teaching Tour organized by National, will be teaching a two-day class on Saturday and Sunday.  Our other teacher, Joni Stevenson, will be teaching a one-day class on Saturday.  Studio Time will also be offered on Saturday only.

The Fine Print

Classes begin at 9:00 in the morning and end at 4:30 in the afternoon.  There will be a break for lunch and the teachers may be offering kits and other unique items for sale after the end of classes.  Because Gary is traveling from Tasmania, Australia, extra time is required for shipping supplies to the US.  This means the registration deadline for his class will be June 15, 2013.

The registration fee & deadline schedule is as follows:

Gary Clarke, Desert Fan, two-days             $140    Registration Deadline June 15, 2013
Joni Stevenson, one-day                            $110    Registration Deadline September 1, 2013
Studio Time, one-day                                  $40    Registration Deadline September 1, 2013

Registration includes lunch.  Spaces are limited in all classes (including Studio Time).  All registrations received by June 15, 2013 will be treated as “first day” registrations and receive equal consideration.  Registrations received after this date will be processed in the order received.  Registration closes on September 1, 2013.

If you desire overnight accommodations, please contact The Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel directly by calling 888-627-7182.  Rooms at the hotel are available at the nightly rate of $99 (plus room tax).  Please mention “New England Embroiderers’ Guild” when making your reservation.

Desert Fan with Gary Clarke (detail)

Class Description: This project is not hard in itself although I have marked it advanced, it is however challenging in the scale of work needed.  I know that each student will improve in the execution of the work as it progresses; therefore, I include a sample piece to work on before getting into the larger design.  The base fabric is a Japanese organza stretched over a wooden frame.  The thread used is primarily one strand of six stranded cotton.  There is further embellishment of beads.

Kit Contents: Mounted organza, stretcher bars, needle book, instructions, photographs, patterns, pre-printed panel, paper fan, beads, threads, stretcher bars, DVD.
